The assignment was to select an Architect, study their work, then create an architectural work of art that reflects the study and offer a short thesis statement over the work and it's importance.
Bilbao's work intrigued me immediately. As I explain in my thesis statement, her work offers a balance between organic and man-made which I found stunning and real. Her work heavily utilizes earth and plants providing for both nature and humans.
Furthermore, she creates a feeling for the space in her work rather than only the structure itself. This is what separates her work from many architects. She aims higher than setting, she pushes to the experience.
When I set out to photograph material for this assignment, I was living in Houston, Texas which is full of plants submerged in a cement city. I wanted the shots to feel natural and some to be more intentional. I wanted to capture a variety of architectural elements and plants, then create a new structure from that.
I was aiming to create a building you see more from the feeling of the visual rather than the structure. This was a bold direction to take, but I wanted to explore this technique and challenge myself.

Final Composition

Gathering and Creating Materials

Thumbnails
All of the thumbnails are an experimentation of building a structure using various shapes to create a structure. Circles were the initials desire for shape with the goal of an organic feel and immersive feel. This; however, set a challenge of building a structure without it feeling like a dome.

These are the first three drafts brought to the table. The upper right comps are a generic layout, the initial testing of images in the thumbnails. The big comps are the official drafts submitted, bringing the images out of their base for that immersive feel.

The first round of revisions brought me to the two spheric comps. After adding lights to Comp One and a plant rail to Comp Two, the decision become tough. Ultimately what won was the utilization of the plant wall on Comp One.
